Donald Crowhurst attempted in 1968 to win the 'Round-the-World Yacht Race.' in a trimaran of his own design a self confessed amateur the general public would normally give full support - but not when they learn that after the vessel became un-sea-worthy he hung around the Atlantic hoping to cheat his competitors and claim false glory.
