2001: A Space Odyssey

Rare original lenticular advertising from 1968 for the film "2001: A Space Odyssey". This piece ranks among the rarest and most collectable pieces of sci-fi memorabilia and were only available to selected Cinerama cinemas who could offer Super Panavsion and Metrocolor. Commissioned by MGM and Stanley Kubrick the campaign used cutting-edge lenticular technology for the theatrical promotion producing an iconic design that is highly prized by collectors today. These early 3-D items were printed by Toppan in Japan, a firm renowned for their fine lenses. Because the production costs were incredibly high only a limited number were produced making surviving example exceptionally  scarce.

This lenticular pictures the astronauts taking measuring and data from their lunar explorations on the surface of the moon. When seen in the flesh and not on the computer screen, this three dimensional lenticular image has real depth featuring space crafts in different positions in space together with four astronauts and a space camera all showing a great depth of presence with the moon and the planet surface stretching out in the distance.

The lenticular it should be noted is not completely flat and this is due to the manufacturing process to produce the effect of depth. These lenticulars measuring 10 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches were produced with a stand on the back for tabletop display but this example has had this neatly removed and would be most suitable now for display in a frame. The lenticular has some minor scratches and marks on the surface when examined closely in a certain light but these minor flaws are really not noticeable and the lenticular displays really well with the focus of course being on the depth of the action.
