Pacino's performance earned him a fourth Oscar nomination as he portrays the bank robber who seeks to fund a sex change operation (strange but true). He is paired with John Cazale both fresh from Godfather Part 11 as the inept bunglers who draw unbelievable attention to themselves and invoke a hostage situation. Sidney Lumet directed Pacino in "Serpico" two years before and directed the media sensation "Network" the same year as directing this film.
